Account

An account is the user's own personal area inside an operating framework. Within an account a user can make use of all the functions that the service provider allows, however user data will remain isolated from other users data.
Normally an account will require the user to authenticate his/her identity.

ActiveX

ActiveX is a technology developed by Microsoft©, and is also used with the Explorer browsers.

ADSL

Acronym for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, ADSL is a broadband communication standard that is widely used and uses a normal telephone line (twisted line cable).
Unlike analogue telephone connections, the ADSL signal is digital and therefore it is possible to use frequencies that differ from vocal frequencies. The consequence of the exchanged signal asymmetry is that it favours downloads to uploads, and therefore sacrifices the speed of client data transmission to the network in order to improve downloading speed.

Ad space

Space in a web page that is reserved for advertising information, otherwise known as a banner

Ajax

Acronym for Asynchronous Javascript And Xml, Ajax is the technology used to create Rich Internet Applications, otherwise known as web pages that have similar functions to desktop applications.

Antivirus

A computer program that governs detection and removal activity of viruses from files in your computer system.
This type of program is active throughout working sessions and requires regular, daily updates in order to remain efficient.
An antivirus is essential for Internet users so as to avoid compromising the safety of the user's data and protect the operating system itself.

Authentication

Authentication is a process of recognition that allows user identification by means of information known only to the user and to the system that asks for it.
The most common method of authentication is to carry out a login.
